Unique question regarding COBRA and Marketplace coverage, within 60 days special enrollment period….

Hi! I am leaving my job May 5th. I have Shoulder Labrum surgery scheduled for early June, lets say June 10th. My healthcare coverage is covered by my company thru May, so my first COBRA payment would be June 1 ($750ish). I would like to continue with COBRA for the surgery due to surgeon choice and insurance deductible nearly reached, but do not care where I go for PT given the large number of options.

To my knowledge, I cannot have both COBRA and Marketplace insurance at the same time. But, if I am within the 60 day special enrollment period, could I pay my first month of COBRA, then pay for Marketplace beginning July 1? That would allow me to have my surgery ($$$) covered by pretty good insurance, and then pick a Marketplace plan ($300ish) within 60 days.

Please let me know if this is a bad idea. Worst case I maintain my COBRA for 3-4 months, at which point I will have a new job.

Thanks!
