UCLA rejected my request for assistance.

Hope I can get some insight here. UCLA billed me $3.5k for two nights in the ICU (insurance covered the rest of the cost…UCLA actually charges $16k/one night in the ICU without insurance, ridiculous). I submitted a request for financial assistance, including all my debt info, bank statements and tax returns. I thought I’d get at least some assistance… but UCLA flat out denied my request.

Is there a way to appeal this? I only make $52k/year pre-taxes which isn’t a lot living in LA. I also have several debts like school loans, personal loans, etc. with several bills to pay each month. Thought maybe I read somewhere that California changed the eligibility for assistance for patients with incomes over 400% of the federal poverty level? Anyway, it’s really frustrating and hate how healthcare works here.
