Company being sold, can health insurance be lost/deductible reset?

My family of four gets health insurance through my wife, who is a salaried, part-time worker (20 hrs/wk). I am currently unemployed. Her company is (for now) owned by a huge corporation that fortunately gives her insurance, though they pay for less of it. We have a high deductible, around $12k. She was diagnosed with cancer in January, had successful surgery, and is doing chemo for the next five months or so. What is happening now is that the company is being bought by a different gigantic corporation, and the employees’ insurance is being reset, with deductibles going back to zero.

I have a twofold question: Is there any protection for workers having their insurance deductibles reset? We have reached the deductible already (cancer is expensive!) and now have to face the prospect of meeting it again?

Secondly, we’re not sure about this… but what if the new company doesn’t offer benefits to part-time employees? We’ve reached out but haven’t received answers yet… is there legal protection for insured employees if a new holding company doesn’t offer insurance? Obviously, we are pretty screwed if we lose health insurance with chemo ongoing, even worse than if the deductible resets.
