My FIL passed away from cancer with hundreds of thousands in medical debt. For my wife and her brother to get anything from his estate, most of this would need to be forgiven somehow. Any options we can look into?

FIL passed away in 2019 from cancer. He had no health insurance at the time. From diagnosis to death, it was about 2 months.

He was living in and diagnosed in California where he had a hospital stay. He then moved to Utah (where we were living) so we could take care of him. He had a hospital stay there as well.

His estate was not worth much, but we recently found out he had a $150k life insurance policy, but no beneficiaries were named, so it would go to the estate which would then just be used to pay for those medical bills.

Anything we can do to try and get those bills forgiven/reduced so that some of his estate can be passed to my wife and her brother?

We are currently living in MD if that matters
