Here is my timeline of events leading to this pickle I’m in.
December 2021: health insurance at $48 per month with my tax credit. Happy, care free, no worries.
January 2022: Billed for $250 per month for the same insurance plan, told my tax credit reduced despite no change in income, worries begin. WA Healthplanfinder customer service retroactively cancelled my insurance starting January 1st as I can’t afford $250. Looking back on it, I should have just paid. Life would be easier. I signed up for a new, lower cost plan with the same insurance company.
During this time, my paperwork took a while to process and the insurance company (Regence) wouldn’t accept my $1.92 February payment without the $250 January payment. While the retroactive cancellation of January did occur through the WA Healthplanfinder, in the process Regence cancelled my February insurance. Had to visit doctor in February, therefore accrued medical debt, because I thought (and was told by WA Healthplanfinder) that I was insured or that my February bills would be transferred to March or whenever my coverage retroactively began.
April 2022: Receive notice that my retroactive cancellation was successful for January, but Regence also refused to re-insure me with a re-instatement. Uh oh, panic sets in. I ignore panic to care for my grandma, who got and is still dealing with a severe case of COVID and to deal with life events.
May 2022: My therapist, who I have been paying out of pocket, says since we are in different states (we both moved a year into our sessions) it is time for him to move on. Very sad, need therapy. Time to get my insurance figured out and find a new therapist. Call WA Healthplanfinder and told I don’t meet qualifying events so don’t qualify for special enrollment because I voluntarily stopped paying. Regence won’t take me back. I have thousands in medical bills that I thought we be covered because I thought I was insured.
What do I do? I’m at a loss. Thanks in advance. I thought a qualifying life event to receive insurance was existing AKA being alive, but apparently that doesn’t cut it in the United States.
