Choosing an Insurance Plan

Hello

I just moved to Illinois from St Louis, Missouri. Although I am in Illinois now, I am still very close to Missouri, right across the border.

I had a (shitty) health insurance plan through Marketplace when I lived in Missouri. Many of the medical offices I called – about 90% of 15 or so – didn’t take my insurance. I ended up giving up on trying to get seen.

Since I moved, I received a letter that I needed to choose a new health care plan. I did the Marketplace application again, and it spit out the plan options.

I have two questions that I am hoping someone can help me with:

1) The Marketplace plans seem to all say “Illinois” – does this mean these plans are not going to be accepted in another state? All of the good, major hospitals nearby that I would want access to are in Missouri. There are no good hospitals near me in Illinois.

2) Any tips on how to find out which insurance plans providers will actually accept, before I select a plan? When I was calling providers a few months back, if they said they didn’t take my insurance, I asked them what insurance they did take, hoping to switch to a better one next open enrollment. But many of the people I spoke with really didn’t seem to know.

Thank you for any and all help. And, I have to say it, damn this truly awful insurance system. I just want to go to the doctor and I’m tired of trying, unsuccessfully, to jump through all these hoops.
