Activating COBRA and adding dependents

My wife and I have health insurance separately through our employers. We are both leaving our jobs this summer. She and our kids are on her plan and they have coverage through the end of July. I am alone on my employer’s plan and have coverage through the end of June. I start a new job in August but won’t be allowed to join the health plan for three months. Eventually, our whole family will all be on my new plan.

We plan to use COBRA in the meantime but it’s a bit complicated since we have two different plans currently. Would I be allowed to activate COBRA for my plan and add my wife and kids to it if they were previously on a separate plan?

If you can’t change the dependents when adding COBRA, then I may try to declare a qualifying life event when my coverage expires and join my wife’s plan, which will be active for another month. And then we’d just continue her plan via COBRA.

Thanks for the help figuring out my options!
