First time here, looking for advice on this situation. If I’m better off asking elsewhere please direct me. Thanks for any advice in advance. If it helps, I’m in NY.
So here’s the situation. Last May I had blood work done, routine plus stuff for my hypothyroidism. They send it to the associated hospital to run the tests. Doc had my insurance and I paid my copay on the visit and left, heard nothing about it until I received a bill yesterday for a little over $1200 for this blood work and it wasn’t billed to insurance at all!
So, I call my insurance and explain, asking why they didn’t pay. I have the same insurance company as last year but under a different plan due to employment changes. They go back and look, and say that they weren’t billed until March 2021, so it’s provider liable and not to be paid by me OR them. As a precaution I take a trip to my doctor’s office with the bill. They say it’s not in the system for them at all and to call the number of billing department for the hospital on the bill.
I call and am told they didn’t receive my insurance information until March and that the only insurance they had on file last May wasn’t what I had but an insurance I haven’t had in like 5 years. They said they will put the bill on hold and investigate and to call back in 10-15 days. They said I may be still liable after all.
Who is right here, will I end up liable? Is it not the billing department’s fault for not contacting me when they couldn’t bill to my insurance?
*please note, I’m assuming it’s the hospitals billing department but may be a company they outsource their bill collections to, I’m not entirely sure.
