Laying awake at 3am trying to figure out if my husband’s insurance will cover an ambulance trip. Background: husband has been immobile for 36 hours due to what we believe is a trapped nerve. We would like to go to the hospital in the morning, but are unsure if we should use an ambulance. He has Excellus coverage in NY, Essential Plan I through NY Marketplace. I checked his coverage details, $75 copay for both in and out of network coverage. But, no coverage for “volunteer ambulance companies affiliated with fire departments” which has me nervous. Our closest ambulance is attached to a volunteer fire company, but is staffed with paid paramedics 24/7. Will I be stung for no coverage and have to pay the full price? My husband needs medical care, but also can’t bare the pain enough to get into our car. Even better, Excellus doesn’t open until 8am for me to call and confirm what we would be charged. So this is both a question and venting. If I find out from Excellus I’ll be sure to update this.
