Are Insurance Providers Required to Send Letters of Termination?

Hey guys, I have a bit of a weird scenario… Well, probably not that weird. I am in VA, US and my fiancee has medicaid.

My fiancee got an email from the health insurance marketplace, and she inferred from that email that she would be losing medicaid due to the amount of money she makes. I’m pretty sure it was just an automatic “hey if you want to enroll TONIGHT IS LITERALLY THE LAST CHANCE” email.

Well, funny thing, she actually enrolled facepalm

I had her immediately cancel it, as there is no way we can afford to pay $220/month for health insurance, hoping that it would be refunded (will it?). I explained that marketplace is pretty much for people who can’t get health insurance thru employment.

Was this wrong of me? The Marketplace doesn’t have access to her medicaid file does it? And I’m pretty sure that if she was losing coverage, medicaid would have to send a letter of termination. Well, I had her call medicaid and they said she had to renew to find out???

What do we do? How do we know if she’s going to be losing coverage? We didn’t even get the paperwork they send for renewing that we usually get. She did it over the phone when she called to ask if she’s actually losing coverage.

Are we screwed? I mean, I guess we could elope and I could add her to my employer insurance if I had to or something like that.
