I’m 40 years old, living in Virginia, and run a small online business with no employees. In 2020 I made about $90,000 because online sales were high during lockdowns and when people were getting stimulus checks. This past year will probably be a little bit less.
Anyway, insurance through the marketplace is getting more and more unaffordable for basic bronze plans and barely covers anything at all. Most office visits cost close to what the self pay no insurance price is. I get better deals on prescriptions through GoodRx than with insurance. It really seems like the only thing it’s good for is in case of an emergency hospital stay. Otherwise I’d just cancel my insurance, self pay everything, and call it a day.
But are there any other options for just emergency plans? It seems like to qualify for catastrophic insurance you have to be under 30. There are short term medical plans that are affordable, but you can’t have them longer than a year or so. Is there anything else I’m missing? Any group plans for small businesses? Or hell I don’t know any other options at all? I’m just realizing what a racket this all is.
Someone I know who sits around all day, doesn’t work at all (but is able to), and lives off their parents gets free marketplace insurance that seems to cover everything. And when I was making minimum wage my plan was pretty good and only $24 a month. But now that I’m doing well and working my ass off to earn a decent salary, insurance costs more than my car payment on a brand new car and doesn’t help with anything until I reach a deductible that I never even get close to. I’m so fed up with it all. I mean with what I’m wasting on insurance premiums, I could pay off my student loans early.
