Baby due date vs. authorization date–any recourse?

Hello,

In November I contacted my insurer, UHC, to ensure everything for my wife’s out-of-network midwife birth would be covered via pre-auth; they told me to do this in July or so when I first notified them. I was asked the best guess for the due date, and I gave 12/6/21.

We received a claim and some payout, but not quite in line with the benefits that the authorization form stated. I asked them to review and they did. They said no adjustments would be made because the birth was 12/3, and the authorization did not start until 12/6. This was via secure message and I guess they selected an option where I couldn’t reply to their message for clarification.

This seems unconscionable to me as the authorization was made with a guess (you can’t pin down a baby’s birth). Do I have any recourse at all here? I would appreciate any tips/strategies.
