bad timing. what are my options?

Hello. All my jobs previously had health benefits that came with the job(military, first responder fire side) so please forgive my ignorance on subject matter.

I’m in the middle of a transition phase and I’m in the process of leaving my job that has health benefits to go to program for a year and start a new career there. I’ll be going a city/state job with benefits to nothing. I’m a Veteran so normally that’s no big deal.

Me and are wife are trying to have our first baby this year and last year was a remarkable year where I cashed out some stocks and my Gross was around 130k(wife was in a vocational program so no income).

I wish to do same program but I’m finding out how insane some health insurance options are and reading they go by your last income tax year (which was double than what I usually make) so now I find myself not having income for a whole year while possibly being charged like I make 130k a year. We’re seeing some quotes that charge northwards of 1k a month. Starting in May it will just be my wife’s income of 80k and no benefits to support us in the meantime.

Me and my wife are both in our thirties in the Tri-State area of NYC I appreciate your insight and advice. Be Happy
