My boyfriend (34M) has symptoms consistant with a pinched nerve that began over a month ago after waking up one morning with significant right-sided neck pain. He’s since been dealing with the pain every minute of everyday, ranging from annoying to unbearable with tinging/numbness of his right index finger and thumb. Everytime he tries to do a pushup, his arm completely gives out. There is noticeable muscular atrophy in the affected arm in comparison to the other as well.
The pain has now progressed to affecting his sleep overall regardless of the routine therapeutic stretches (which were recommended from a viable online source for those specializing in PT and sports medicine), increased discipline in posture, and minor adjustments to his sleeping position.
The man downs roughly 800mg doses of ibuprofen 3-4 times daily just to take the edge off of the pain. This is clearly not sustainable. He needs to see a specialist, but only has Humana, which severely limits our options as far as I’ve been led to believe. (I’ve always been insured under my parents’ plan with Aetna so this is uncharted territory for me.)
Question is, where do we start? Do I find a PCP that accepts Humana and then go from there, or what? I’m worried about the potential cost of the numerous X-rays and MRI scans that will be required, possible multiple visits to a chiropractor and/or PT, and worst case scenario…surgery.
We’ve been avoiding the ER and urgent care with the intention to:
Not take up unnecessary resources that someone with an otherwise more acute condition may require more immediate medical intervention for.
Get more on track with treating the root of the cause as opposed to being ousted out the door after only having the pain itself temporarily addressed. Save ourselves the trouble of getting screwed over by the ridiculously priced, non-essential diagnostic services performed by default and sneakily billed separately from the entire ER visit itself.
Thanks in advance for any advice that could point us in the right direction. I’m stressed out and hate seeing him in so much pain. He starts RN school in the Fall, and at this rate, he won’t be able to lift or move a single patient if this issue remains unfixed…All for the sake of avoiding financial burden. It’s infuriating.
