California – Choosing a hospital to deliver my twins at

Located in California and I have medical insurance through my employer.

My first baby was born at home with two midwives present. Insurance did not cover any of the fees, but we couldn’t be happier with the experience and planned on doing it again. Well, we just found out we’re having twins and that changes things a bit. Legally, here in California, midwives are not allowed to deliver twins at home unless an OB is present. If we want to contract with the one OB in our region who delivers twins at home, his fee is about $20,000. So… Not really an option.

All that said (maybe unnecessarily), we will need to go to a hospital to deliver. We have a couple of hospital options in-network and let’s just say I am not happy with the choices. There is a hospital that I’d be OK going to, but it is out-of-network. Is there ANY way to get this covered without switching insurance plans? Could my doctor refer me to an OB at this hospital? Would insurance then cover some of it since it was a referral?

We were trying to get pregnant but TWO babies came as a total surprise, otherwise I would have switched my insurance plan during my last open enrollment. We’re still in shock and trying to think out of the box!

Thanks for any and all help.
