Can anyone help me navigate what we should do?

My husband had a ruptured appendix and sepsis on November 17th. He was air transported from the emergency room we went to, to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville and spent 2 weeks in the surgical ICU. He discharged on Nov 6th from Vandy to an inpatient rehabilitation hospital. He had insurance through Anthem Blue Cross but that coverage ended on Nov 30 and new insurance United Healthcare began on Dec 1 (he had gotten a new job hence the insurance switch). Anyway, bills have not started coming in yet but I’m getting denials already from UHC. So far they are denying 12/1-12/6 of his SICU stay for sepsis on the basis that it isn’t medically necessary, they said they have not received tests. Anyway, I’m sure this will not be the first hoop we’re going to have to jump through with this, but I’m trying to figure out how to navigate it all. Does the hospital billing department usually handle the appeals, is that on me? Do I just send UHC all of his medical records? Any tips or advice will be an amazing help.
