I was in the hospital to give birth and had some high blood pressure issues. Long story short on the 5th day there, 3 days after delivering my healthy baby, I said I wanted to be released. I was no longer on any drugs other then prescription pills and the experience was traumatic and had me extremely anxious and sleep deprived. The doctors would not sign off on my release and told me I could leave against medical recommendation but my insurance would cover none of the stay/procedures which I knew was tens of thousands of dollars at that point. I begged every encounter for 3 more days before they released me, with no substantial change in my blood pressure or treatment regiment, so basically no rhyme or reason why I was now okay to leave. I was later told by two doctor friends that this claim of insurance not covering anything was a common lie that some doctors will tell to keep patients that want to leave. My OBGYN when confronted with this information said he didn’t know anything about it and said “well do you know it’s not true with Tennessee insurance”. I have yet to call my insurance to verify. But when I consider it, it just doesn’t make sense that my insurance wouldn’t cover my labor because I ended up leaving 2 days later with another medical condition that they wouldn’t clear me because of. Does any know the policy on insurance coverage in Tennessee or nation wide as far as being released against medical recommendation goes? (I have BCBS for the record)
