Can my insurance refuse claims because provider does not have an NPI?

I see a therapist who is out of network because she’s amazing and deals with my specific issue. I submitted claims to my insurance company like 5 months ago and my insurance hasn’t processed them and keeps giving me different excuses.

Today I was told that I need 1) diagnosis code 2) and the ITIN and NPI for the provider. (They didn’t actually ask for this information on the forms I submitted and only today told me this.) The diagnosis code was easy, but my provider told me she doesn’t have an NPI. There is nothing in my policy insisting providers have NPIs, but my insurance company basically said they can’t process the claims without one.

Has anyone had this issue? What do I do about it?
