Can you have two insurances at the same time?

Hello. My wife and I both have health insurance offered by our new employers. My wife’s new job starts on July 1, while mine starts in late August. My health insurance is better than hers so we were hoping to cover our family under mine. However, that would mean not having coverage from July 1-late August.

What would you recommend we do? A few options we thought of, which we don’t know if it’s feasible/legal/logistically convenient:

1) Enroll in hers to get family coverage starting July 1, and keep it. When I start working in late August, enroll in mine. Then we will all have two health insurances. (is that legal, and if so any downside to this?). There is no monthly premium for either of our plans, but mine allows a larger network.

2) Enroll in hers until I start my job. Then un-enroll her, and just use mine. How easy is that to do?

Any recommendations overall?

Thank you.
