I’m currently paying a ton each month for COBRA health insurance in the US. I plan to backpack Southeast Asia for the rest of the year. I am considering cancelling my COBRA insurance because of the high cost while I’m away. I figure I can get an emergency travel health insurance policy much cheaper. If I need routine care while I’m away, it will be in a very cheap country.
Other than having a tax penalty for not having a full health insurance policy all year, is there any downside to this approach?
Thanks!
