Hi Reddit, I made an account just so I could get help with this, or vent if that’s all I’m able to. I’m sorry if there’s etiquette beyond the community rules I’m not familiar with.
I’ve been trying to find a therapist, counselor, psychiatrist, psychologist, whatever type of person it is who can help with a mood disorder that’s worsened in recent months. Problem is, the insurance I have through my employer is proving to be an obstacle. It’ll be easy to understand when I explain the nonsense that is the insurance card.
Ultimately the insurance is through Benefit Plan Administrators. However, the Medical Plan table on the front shows logos for 6 Degree Health and PHCS (Private Health Care Systems) but also instructs the subscriber to go to MultiPlan to look up a provider. BUT WAIT. On the back it says I have to contact AIMM (a health consultation company) to get pre-certification for mental health services.
So where is one to start? Well, if you call AIMM they give you a list of hospital providers who 1) aren’t accepting new patients and 2) only service patients at those given hospitals. And if you look on the MultiPlan site? You end up with providers who aren’t accepting new patients, outdated contact info (one phone number was for an oncologist (cancer specialist)), or providers who don’t take your insurance after all.* And BPA doesn’t have their own provider locator service.
My theory is that no matter how I explain it, they decide it’s too complicated to even investigate.)
I’ve been calling around for two weeks now. I even tried to apply for state Medicaid, but I’m not eligible because of my income. Today I got through to the insurance broker my employer works with, and they’re trying to get AIMM to provide information that’s actually useful. And this is all after I floundered with the same issue in March and decided to find someone with a sliding scale for out-of-pocket for a mental health evaluation.
I’ll try to update this post as the situation progresses. If you have any advice or similar anecdotes, feel free to share in the replies.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I had no luck either when I looked on PsychologyToday or HealthGrades. BPA isn’t in their list of insurances, and the providers who are reported to take MultiPlan have said they don’t take my insurance.
