I am changing jobs, new job coverage is not retroactive to start date so I will have a gap of 4 weeks. I carry the insurance through my current job for my family of 5 (self, spouse, 3 young children). My husband could get coverage from his job but doesn’t currently, however I believe this would trigger a QLE for him? I also had a baby earlier this year so have met our OOP max on my current plan.
I believe in any case I can wait and see if we need healthcare during those 4 weeks because either my husband’s new coverage or COBRA would be retroactive to the date of my termination with my current job, is that correct? But I want to be ready with a plan in case we do need to go and get coverage due to an issue during those 4 weeks, especially with children I’m worried about a potential issue.
We don’t really want my husband’s coverage for the whole rest of the year because my new coverage is better, and per the birthday rule his would be primary if we elect both… Plus it’s a waste of money to pay 2 premiums for the year. Would me starting employer coverage for the family be another QLE for him to deselect coverage so we’d only have to have it for the gap? Is that allowed or would we be stuck with it until the end of the year?
Or would COBRA for my existing plan be a better choice because we’ve already met our max OOP on my plan? I’d assume we would only elect to get coverage in that 4 week period if something truly bad happened, so it would probably be pretty expensive.
What am I missing?
