Hey guys,
I’m leaving my current job and my health insurance coverage will end this week, and I’m not starting my next job until July (already accepted, but negotiated a later start date). Problem is I have a colonoscopy scheduled for next week, when I will no longer be covered by my current job’s insurance, and won’t yet be on my new job’s insurance.
So I assume COBRA is the way to go rather than trying to get on a new plan from the exchange for a few weeks–as I’ve already paid 20% of my deductible, and 40% of my out of pocket max for the year—but I’m not clear on how it works. I know I get 60 days to sign up for it once my current coverage ends, but with the colonoscopy next week–does that mean:
I’ll be billed like I don’t have insurance and I should just wait until I get COBRA, which will then be applied to reduce the cost? I should pay whatever I’m billed, and COBRA will refund me the portion they will pay later? Something else?
Any help is appreciated, as I’m a little lost as to what is the best route.
