I received an EOB from my federal employee health insurance for a COVID test and doctor’s visit that never happened from a provider I’ve never even heard of. I live in Texas, and the COVID testing clinic is in Oklahoma. They billed my insurance for ~$1,000 for a test I never took or received.
Phantom billing is when healthcare providers submit claims for reimbursement to the government for services or procedures they did not perform.
I looked into the provider listed on my EOB and it looks like it’s one of those sketchy pop-up for-profit testing businesses. The reviews for the provider from people who actually took tests say they never received results, were overbilled, etc.
I’ve already filed a fraud claim through my health insurance plan. If anyone has been in a similar situation or knows of other legal recourse please let me know!
