Claiming your family members aren’t offered coverage for an employer-sponsored health plan, causing them to get a credit?

I got a new job. The employee only coverage is $110 every two weeks.

The employee plus family is $850 biweekly.

So roughly 220/mo or 1700/mo. I wanted to explore the market for alternatives. I ended up calling and speaking to a lady for quite a bit. She explained a few of the questions and got me to where I submitted an application.

If I put that my family is eligible for employer sponsored coverage, all 4 of us, it says that no one qualifies for tax credits. I understand this, and is what I was anticipating.

The lady told me I should enroll in my company’s plan, by myself. Then say in the marketplace application my spouse and kids aren’t eligible for coverage from an employer, then claim the tax credits towards their premium (it was about $610/mo). I asked her multiple times if she was sure that was allowed, and she assured me she had been working at the marketplace since they started it and it’s been done multiple times and it is fine.

This seems extremely wrong to me, but $620/mo for premiums sounds much better than $1230, or $1700…

Does this sound right to you? Have you heard of such a thing? I don’t want to get thrown in Obamacare jail or get a bill at the end of the year for $7320.
