Hi,
Does the secondary insurance cover all of the balance if the primary barely pays anything?
I have two dental plans from two different employers purchased about 6 months apart. I thought both plans themselves are primaries however, the dentists office I went to said the primary would be the one that started first. I saw my dentist in 10/2021 and they billed both insurances.
The earlier payer paid $2 towards my bill because the dentist was out of network (the dental office told me I was good to go and I didnt realize it was out of network as aI went to the same franchise before just in a different location without trouble). The other insurance made the majority of the remaining balance. I always assumed this majority-paying one was my primary as it’s associated with my main job but I realize I may be wrong.
I called the office today to see if it was all paid off and they told me there was a credit to my account and I will probably receive $20 . I told them I was very worried about getting a bill (of $300+) and they told me if anything the insurance overpaid etc.
However, they also told me, they have to resend the payment back because it looked like the Coodination of Benefits was not done correctly and the insurance that paid the majority of the bill probably didn’t realize there was another insurance and once they find out, they may minimIze the amount they paid (E.g. try to coordinate it with the other insurance properly??).. I’m confused and just scared of getting slapped with that $300+ . I was so happy to hear/see the other insurance paid it but now I can’t stop worrying.
Do you have any thoughts on what might happen/what I can do? Or more importantly, if someone can explain what all of this means, I’d definitely appreciate it.
I called the “primary” insurance and they said b/c the office was out of network, they weren’t going to pay more but I could appeal. They said they are my primary dental insurance simply because of the type of plan it is. The other plan’s customer service is closed today.
