I currently have insurance through my husband’s employer, however he is likely losing his job at the end of the month. We’ve looked at the COBRA premiums and they are incredibly high and we’re not going to be able to afford them, but I have some important dental work scheduled next month that I really need to get. I’m relatively new to the US and this is my husband’s first experience with job loss/insurance so we’re a little confused about what our options are so any help would be appreciated.
1) Can we just opt into dental coverage only through COBRA? His dental is with a different provider and we could definitely afford the dental premiums by themselves.
2) If he gets a new job more than 30 days after we lose insurance, will we be able to opt into that new insurance or will we need to wait until open enrollment?
