Coverage gap when moving states and starting new job

I am currently in California and will be moving to Illinois on April 1. I have just quit my previous job and my coverage from my employer plan will end March 31. I will begin my new job on April 4 but will not be able to sign up for coverage until May 1. What is the best way to remain covered during this gap and how will moving states effect this? I do not have any pre-existing conditions or expect to need to see a doctor or have any procedures done during this time.
