Creating an employee to qualify for small business group rate and plan?

I own a small business as does my husband, but neither of us have any employees so we don’t qualify for plans outside of the marketplace (new york) and we are unable to get a group rate. I’m curious, if I were to “hire” say, an independent contractor that works in my space but pay them say $1… would this qualify us both for say, United healthcare or Aetna or some other plan that isn’t listed on the marketplace. And if so, how would this affect my spouse (I don’t think you can hire your spouse?) and would there be a way to get them on this plan?
