Hi reddit, I had a question regarding claims and racial bias.
I have breathing issues due to a deviated septum and recently, I looked into surgery, specifically septoplasty to get it fixed. When the doctor’s office submitted a claim to insurance, two claims were created, but only one was approved. I’m not sure exactly about the one that did get approved, however, the one that didn’t was the one to fix my collapsed nasal valve.
A part of me wonders if the denial had something to do with the fact that I’m an Asian woman. Since many Asian women get nose jobs in Asian countries, I was wondering if the insurance company denied my claim because they thought I was trying to get rhinoplasty under the guise of septoplasty.
Of course there’s many other factors as well and I could be wrong, but was just wondering if that might have anything to do with it. What do you guys think?
Also, I tried to keep it short because the entire story is long, but if you guys have any questions, I’d be more than happy to answer them.
Misc: I live in GA and use my parents health insurance, United Healthcare
