Okay all. I have spent around 11 hours attempting to remedy this situation. Prepare for a wall of text.
I am originally from Wyoming and was a teacher. I taught for the 2020/2021 school year and was insured through my school district. Around February of 2021 I made the choice to move to Georgia after the school year was over. I take daily medications so I made sure to double check when my insurance ran out. (August 31st, 2021.)
I got a new teaching job and have insurance through them. These benefits set in September 1st.
Last week, I received a notice from BCBS of wyoming that I owe them $1200. This was the first I had ever heard of it so I PANICKED. I called BCBS and they basically told me that on September 9th I picked up two prescriptions from a Walmart pharmacy totaling the $1200 amount – which is what they paid out to Walmart, and what I owed them because I was no longer insured with them after August 31st. I immediately answer that I had a different insurance during that time, and that it is not my fault that Walmart charged the incorrect insurance. They basically said that I needed to speak to whom I was currently insured with to remedy the situation.
Fast forward to 15 phone calls and being pinballed between several people later and I have a representative from BCBSWY and my current insurance rep who called Walmart and found out that on Sep. 3 I picked up two scripts and they were billed to the correct insurance, and then Sep. 9 when I picked up two other scripts, they billed the wrong insurance. My current insurance rep explains that I should not be asking to pay out this amount of money because it is not my fault that 1. Walmart billed the wrong insurance and 2. That BCBSWY still had me as active when I was no longer insured through them.
The BCBSWY rep comes back and says that they have already paid that money and I owe it and need to pay it, and I can set up a payment plan. I said I am absolutely NOT paying that money because I was insured the whole time, and that it isn’t my fault that their insurance company incorrectly paid out when they shouldn’t have. She starts screaming at me saying that it isn’t their fault that I was left active in the system because it takes time etc etc etc to the point that I am in tears on the phone and I ask to speak to her supervisor – she said he doesn’t take calls and that I’ll need to wait for a call back.
After I get off the phone with her my current rep says that I should call Walmart and ask why they charged the correct insurance on Sep. 3, but the incorrect on Sep. 9. There wasn’t a supervisor available until Monday.
I’m so upset because $1200 is a lot of money and I’ve truly done nothing wrong except pay a lot of money every month to be insured. BCBSWY swears up and down they are not responsible for the money because I should have checked to see if they were charging the right insurance AND there is only a 7 day reversal time period.
Any help or advice would be so greatly appreciated.
