I recently became divorced, and was removed from my husband’s health insurance plan. I started working with a broker to apply for private medical insurance through United Healthcare. My application went to underwriting (US Healthgroup), and they requested my medical records, and denied my application due to some pre-existing medical conditions. Who doesn’t take ambien occasionally – so I have insomnia – or at least that was one of the denials. MRI to test for breast implant leakage and my blood levels, although in “normal” range were low for potential diabetes – these was noted in my last annual exam by my PCP. I am 54 years old, and extremely healthy and only ever go to my pcp for an annual checkup.
My broker came back with an Aetna PPO plan, for $358/month, but it says Short Term Medical on the brochure. What does that mean? Plus, he has gone awol on me…
I am currently unemployed, and was lucky to obtain a divorce settlement that will allow me to live modestly off my investments if necessary. I don’t get a monthly divorce allowance, but will commencing 2022 because my ex husband has to pay me for my share of our business interests.
I was considering not purchasing health insurance at all, but saw someone’s note about that not being a good idea because of the current covid climate. When I factor in the amount of annual medical bills I incur, plus a high deductible, it almost makes no sense to get insurance.
I live in Georgia. My broker told me that open enrollment for the ACA plans was closed, and besides, those are hideously expensive.
Any advice?
