Do I drop my insurance?

I’m currently in grad school and am enrolled in short term insurance through First Health Network. My monthly premium is $114 (which is a lot for my student stipend) and I have a $5000 deductible that has not been met. This plan seems too expensive for the benefits (or lack thereof) and the copays are steep ($50-$75) compared to my previous insurance. I also had to switch providers after enrolling due to in-network limitations.

I recently received a bill for $700 from lab tests done earlier this year. First Health Network isn’t covering any of it due to my deductible. I am currently in the process of trying to lower the bill/apply for financial assistance as that seems to be my only option. I am highly considering dropping my coverage as the monthly bill doesn’t seem worth it given the deductible. Of note, I have a rare connective tissue disorder (Hyperconnective Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome) that very fortunately doesn’t require regular healthcare (no medications, no routine visits, no specialists, etc.). However, it has led to some unanticipated hospitalizations and surgeries in the past. Otherwise, I’m a healthy 28 year old male. I have been uninsured in the past and successfully had hospital/surgery bills either significantly reduced or completely waived due to my low income as a grad student. This, honestly, is starting to seem like the safer and less frustrating route. I’m 28, healthy (even with EDS), and am tired of dealing with the unreasonable costs of health insurance. Thoughts?

Thanks!
