Does dental insurance work the same as health insurance?

I have a job that offers Health/Dental/Vision and I have a dentist appointment set finally! I’m going to need work done for sure, tooth pulled, tooth covered, cavities, chips, the works. It’s suck, I know, I brush everyday but never had dental care and it cost too much out of pocket without insurance.

So what does dental insurance normally cover? I have UnitedHealth and they cover general visits, but they didn’t get into what % of costs of the orthodontist or whatever I would need would cover. Can someone explain dental insurance to me so I can sort of understand how $10,000 of dental work is going effect me economically at once, and over time?
