I recently got married and started a new job at almost the same time. My job offered better health insurance than my spouse so I enrolled in my company’s plan. I’ve been on the plan about 5 months but the company just announced they are rolling out a new health insurance plan for the next open enrollment period that is WAYYYY worse than the plan they currently offer that I enrolled in. This now makes my spouse’s health insurance plan a better plan than mine but my company’s enrollment period isn’t during his open enrollment period and we no longer have had a recent life changing event (marriage).
What do I need to do to switch to his plan? Do I need to join my new plan until his open enrollment period? Is quitting my company insurance because they got a sucky new plan considered a life changing event that I can enroll without the open enrollment period?
I’m so annoyed that I had such a great insurance plan and now it’s pulled out from under me when I could have just joined my husband’s plan to begin with.
