So back in October, I went to urgent care and was told I needed to go to the hospital ASAP because of my appendix. I say ok, and head to the nearest hospital. I end up staying for 3 days and receive an appendectomy. Bills start coming in months later, and I’m saddled with a $22,000 bill. I was in between jobs during the surgery (of course) and I didn’t have solid insurance. I bought a short term plan to bridge the gap, but the insurance company wouldn’t pay anything, because they claimed I had to have met the deductible before receiving the surgery. (I find this ridiculous). Anyway, I’ve been losing sleep over this for 6 months. I get a new explanation of benefits from the insurance company yesterday which now shows the balance has been adjusted and the patient responsibility is $0.00. The last time I spoke with the insurance company they said there was a Medicare adjustment they were looking at. Obviously I am quite pleased. I have trouble believing i don’t owe anything now after all the stress I went through. I read something online which states the Biden administration enacted a new rule in July 2021 which prohibits patients from being charged large balances for emergency out of network medical services. Does anyone know if this new rule saved my butt here? If so, the Democrats have earned a voter.
