My father, Michigan resident, who is 62 years old had a stroke in November. He was hospitalized for a week and then released. He has a wife that is currently permanently medically disabled and receives SS. Their combined income is just under 40K/year.
Since he was a commercial truck driver, this instance plus a host of other health issues, is going to put him out of this job for good.
In addition, one of the primary anticoagulant medications he will need to be on for the rest of his life is $450/month. Last, there are near future surgeries that will be necessary so that he does not have another stroke.
They were denied medicaid and are looking to reapply, in hopes that it’ll cover not just the recent hospital visits but future medication costs. At this time they are paying out of pocket for the medication which they will not be able to sustain for very long. In a couple of weeks, I will be assisting as well.
Knowing very little about health insurance or other support – what are the options?
Thank you
