Get taken off parent’s insurance

I always had dual insurance from both of my parents. Now I have my own health insurance. I am looking to be removed from my mother’s Cigna health insurance. I have a hair condition where I lose spots of hair. The only treatment is to get monthly injections of a corticosteroids. I always had to pay out of pocket because my mom’s insurance was “primary” and they called the treatment experimental despite being recognized by most other insurance companies. My dad’s insurance (which said they normally would cover this) won’t cover anything if my mom’s won’t, because his is secondary.

Now I have my own health insurance that will cover this treatment, but am looking to get removed from my mom’s insurance and just keep my dad’s as secondary.

I called Cigna (mom’s insurance) and asked to be removed and was repeatedly told that I legally cannot be removed until I’m 26 despite having my OWN employer provider insurance.

Is this actually true?
