Hey everyone! I know this comes up a lot since many people are in a similar predicament but I just wanted to get some ideas about alternatives that are available. (I hear there’s new apps & new options coming out all the time).
I earn “too much” for medicare eligibility but do not make nearly enough to pay the plans on the marketplace in NJ.
Single father, two kids.
Catastrophic plans won’t cut it and if I’m going to get insurance I want it to at least do something. So now I’m looking at plans that cover remotely anything and they’re about $1,200 – $2,622 per month.
Here is my question. I don’t want to reveal too many personal details so I know that you would be limited in how you can help me. But my question really isn’t about any of these plans but about alternatives.
Can I go without insurance and just pay when something goes down? I highly doubt I will use up from $14,400 to $31,464 in healthcare expenses per year. And even if I pay that in insurance, there will still be co-pays & other expenses and a minimum.
I heard of some online startups where you can pay a small monthly fee and it covers something when it goes down. Does that ring any bells?
Alternatively, I also hear that people get medical care in other countries. I wouldn’t mind taking my kids to Mexico or Canada if something were to happen.
Please share any insight or alternatives. Thank you in advance for your experience and willingness to help.
