Have two insurance policies with different providers – both are saying the other is secondary and are not covering services retroactively.

I have two health insurance plans:

United Healthcare PPO (I am a dependent under my wife)

Anthem Blue Cross PPO (I am the member, but it is a STUDENT plan)

I have had the Anthem plan for years, but when I was added to the UHC plan through my wife, asked Anthem how it works with two insurance plans – they said the other plan is the secondary because a student plan always is considered secondary.

Things were fine for a few years when I would tell all my providers that UHC is my primary and Anthem is my secondary, until about two months ago.

I received a call from a provider and was told they gave the money they received back to UHC because they shouldn’t have been paying for it because they were the secondary plan, not the primary.

I called both companies – Anthem says student plans always take secondary status. UHC says that because I am not the member (my name isn’t first on the UHC plan…), that it can’t be a primary for me since I have a separate plan that has my name first.

I think it’s strange that dependents and members are being treated differently by UHC, and all my sources are telling me student plans are always secondary, but I have no clue what to do. I’m thinking about reaching out to a lawyer for support.
