Hi all,
I’m posting this on behalf on my mom who is in her early 60s.
Long story short – my parents recently finished a 2 year divorce process in California, where all assets had to be divided up 50/50. My mom had been cut off from my dad’s income for the past few years, but we were luckily able to get her placed on California Medicaid. After the divorce ended, we had to sell the house, which will luckily provide my mom with a substantial amount of money. In the process, we ended up moving to Nevada, where we are looking at health insurance options.
Looking at the open marketplace, the cheapest bronze plans are all upwards of $600/month with extremely high deductibles. As my mom does not work and only has the education for entry-level positions, this is an amount that is difficult for us to afford, even with the amount of money we will gain from the divorce settlement. I looked into Nevada Medicaid eligibility since she was previously on Medicaid in California, but I believe that with the divorce settlement, we would be above the $2000 asset limit for eligibility. I also looked into the APTC tax credits which would be extremely helpful for our situation, but I also worry about our eligibility for it once the divorce settlement finishes. She is still quite a few years from qualifying for Medicare. Are there any options that I am not seeing? Greatly appreciate any help you all can give me, thank you in advance.
