Health Insurance Costs

Ok, so last year I had health insurance through my wife’s workplace. She works as a Medical Assistant at the local hospital, so I know it’s super cheap. It was $3900 annual with a split deductible of $400 per spouse and super cheap co-pays.

Fast forward a year. My wife just took her ATI TEAS Test, and she scored very well!!! She will be going to nursing school for 10 and a half months to be an LPN starting in August. So for the time being, we need some sort of coverage to fill the gap while she’s out of work. My workplace just held a Zoom Meeting for “United Healthcare Health Insurance Open Enrollment” and offered us 3 different plans.

The best plan would cost us $18,600 a year. $2,000 deductible 20% coinsurance $5000 max out of pocket Cheap co-pays.

The next plan is $15,500 per year $4,000 deductible 30% coinsurance $12700 Max out of pocket 50% cost for surgeries after deductible has been reached if done at hospital, 30% if surgery or operation is done at a non affiliated clinic. Not as cheap co-pays but not terrible

They also offered a Health Savings Account which sounded like shit and costs over $11,000 a year.

I will not be buying any of these. Are these normal prices? I mean, I know I work for a scumbag company who tends to get into Class Action Lawsuits for not paying overtime or they might try to screw you out of a night work differential and wait until someone calls the Labor Board… They basically hang us upside down and shake us by the ankles in hopes of a few coins to roll out like you’d see on a cartoon. I just had to share this. Please tell me if these are normal prices and I’m the one being unreasonable lol.
