I’m planning to take unpaid maternity leave, in which I won’t be eligible for employee-subsidized healthcare, after my paid leave ends (about 5 months after the baby is born, in October). My employer basically subsidizes my healthcare/a dependent’s, but my husband’s does not.
Based on my husband’s current plan, we’ll be paying almost $400 a month more.
When my benefits are no longer in effect, can our son and I switch to my husband’s plan? Or do we need to enroll him within a month of his birth?
Can we switch from the standard plan to the HDHP during a non-open enrollment qualifying event? It’s $100 a month less, and his employer contributes $1500 a year. (He didn’t listen to me when I begged him to change it during open enrollment, as I’ve asked him for the past 2 years). It looks like there may be 2 options (Blue Cross and Aetna), so maybe we can switch to Aetna if it needs to bea different insurance provider for the switch?
Edit: When I return to work (August 2023), I can re-enroll in my employer’s. Can my son and I switch to my plan, then cancelling the premiums we’d need to pay for the rest of the plan year on my husband’s plan?
Thanks in advance.
