Healthy single male in NY turning 30. Should I move to a state with cheaper individual health care plans?

I am a freelancer in NY and am currently on a catastrophic plan that I pay around $180/month for. I recently realized that I won’t be able to stay on the plan next year when I’m 30. The cheapest available plan would be a bronze plan that costs nearly $500/month. On my income (around $40k pretax) that would be a punch to the gut.

I talked to a broker who told me that New York is a state that doesn’t factor your age into premiums, hence the high cost. He entered some different zip codes on Healthcare.gov and showed me that I could get a gold plan for around $350 in California.

Should I leave NY to save money on health care? Is there a good way to figure out which states have better / cheaper health care plans other than just trying zip codes on Healthcare.gov?
