I purchased an ACA plan through the Maryland marketplace, but my coverage was terminated 3/31 for unpaid bills (I thought autopay was on … I was wrong. Yikes.) I called both Maryland Health Connection and the insurance company (Kaiser) and was told I could not re-enroll, as I do not qualify for special enrollment. I am not eligible for COBRA because my insurance was not from my employer (I’m an independent contractor).
I’m moving to California on 4/26 and have ACA coverage there starting 5/1. In the meantime, I have no insurance, and need something that could cover a catastrophic accident in Maryland (where I currently live) and Louisiana (where I am visiting for a week, and used to live) … as well as in California for a few days, I suppose.
The only option I seem to have for a short term plan in Maryland is UnitedHealthcare (underwritten by Golden Rule Insurance). But if I got that plan, would it even cover an emergency in another state (like Louisiana or California?). What’s my best option?
