[Help] Saw a specialist without PCP referral

Feel very dumb for not knowing in hindsight, but I (25/M) haven’t been to a doctor in a few years and didn’t know the procedures for specialist appointments. I went to see a dermatologist for a rash that wouldn’t go away on its own after a few days. I didn’t realize I needed a PCP referral for my insurance to cover a specialist appointment. They’re asking for it now but I’ve been reading online it’s unethical to ask for doctors to backdate referrals.

Would anyone know any tips or ways to go about this or have similar experiences that they resolved? I’m pretty scared since I don’t have much money (unemployed currently) and that it might be an amount I couldn’t afford at the moment.

EDIT: I was planning on making a walk-in appointment ASAP with my PCP and telling her in person especially since I have an upcoming appointment with a dermatologist. Wondering about second opinions if they would go about it differently.
