I am a transgender woman currently am on NY State Medicaid, using my parents’ health insurance plan to help cover a gender-affirming procedure (orchiectomy). My Medicaid plan includes my parents’ primary insurance as my primary plan.
However, my parents are very transphobic and I do not feel comfortable using my parents’ insurance and letting them know I am trying to undergo gender-affirming surgery.
Therefore, I want to change my primary insurance to my university’s student health insurance plan instead. How would I do that? I tried contacting NY State Medicaid and they told me I would need to get a letter of termination from my parents’ insurance provider (United Healthcare). Apparently it’s not exactly as simple as just uploading/faxing/mailing pictures of my new insurance card and asking to have my old insurance card deleted from their system.
I have attached relevant screenshots.
