My wife’s employer offers health insurance through United HealthCare. The insurance card has a group number and policy number.
When I was speaking to a UHC rep, she told me that we don’t have a group plan, that it is an individual plan. I’ve been looking over our account online and can’t find anything that defines our plan. The office is closed for the weekend.
The reason I’m asking is that there are certain benefits in Florida they can’t deny. The law (627.6686) makes the distinction:
“Health insurance plan” means a group health insurance policy or group health benefit plan offered by an insurer which includes the state group insurance program provided under s. 110.123. The term does not include any health insurance plan offered in the individual market, any health insurance plan that is individually underwritten, or any health insurance plan provided to a small employer.”
We didn’t buy this on the open market and I don’t believe that it is individually underwritten. I can’t imagine that her company is a small employer (it’s a community medical practice in Tampa with over ten offices: doctors, dentists, nurses, MAs, admin, etc.).
How can I confirm if our insurance falls under this law? Is there something in our plan (working, code, etc.) that I can look for? Sadly, the plan documents are not easy to navigate, especially if I don’t know what I’m looking for.
Is having a group number enough evidence to support that it’s a group plan (which makes sense to me)?
Thanks!
