Hello,
So I was on medicaid in NY for years until ~04/2020 when I started a new job and enrolled in my employer healthcare plan. Due to the pandemic, NY state has been continuing my medicaid coverage despite my income rising above the cutoff limits and despite having health insurance (non HDHP) through my insurance.
My enrollment period for new health plans with my employer started this week and they offer a new option for a HDHP with an HSA. Now, I still have medicaid as well due to the state just continuing my coverage due to the pandemic. I know that I cannot contribute to an HSA while also having medicaid, but I was wondering if I cancelled my medicaid this week (and coverage ended before my new employer’s HDHP plan start) could I contribute to an HSA for 2022? I called NY state health insurance department and my new insurance and neither were able to answer me.
Knowing this would be very helpful as I wouldn’t enroll in the HDHP option unless I was able to contribute to an HSA this year.
I looked around, but wasn’t able to find anything. Anyone know the answer or can they point me in the right direction?
