I am confused about the new ACA pre-existing conditions rules. I have a tendon injury in my foot from 2 years ago, and no insurance now. It has worsened lately, and I think I need surgery–does this mean insurance will just cover it? How do I ensure this? Do I lie?

I will be getting insurance for the first time since I was a kid on my parent’s plan, but I don’t have the first clue how to go about making sure I get the right one that will cover this (especially because this is pre-existing).

Do I just lie and say it’s new? I think the doctor needs to know that it’s old, but will they care that I am withholding this from insurance? Surely they would not give a shit, but who knows.

My other alternative is flying abroad to do this, but I would love to avoid that. Thanks
